I am a senior in-house lawyer with more than ten years’ experience across a range of disciplines. Throughout my career, I have often become the go-to person for difficult questions and complex problems. I enjoy untangling complicated issues, particularly in areas where legal, policy, and operational considerations intersect, and helping people find practical ways forward.

As well as technical expertise across privacy and commercial law, I bring experience from both sides of the regulatory relationship, having worked within regulated organisations and as a regulator. I have a deep understanding of how legal and regulatory frameworks operate in practice, from the boardroom right through to the front line. My experience spans advising boards and executive teams on legal and strategic risk, including complex and high-stakes matters; developing operational frameworks that are both legally sound and workable in practice; and helping organisations understand the broader impacts of decision-making. I have seen firsthand that legal and compliance issues often arise from the way organisational decisions are experienced by the people affected by them. I believe that understanding those experiences helps organisations anticipate risks, resolve issues earlier, and make more effective decisions.

I have also built, led, and strengthened in-house legal teams, and supported organisations through significant change.

Building strong, trusted relationships is central to how I work. I take pride in being collaborative and pragmatic, and in providing clear advice that helps people understand their options, make well-informed decisions, and move forward with confidence.

• Regulatory law – statutory interpretation, regulatory design, compliance frameworks, regulatory compliance advice, and engagement with regulators.
• Local Government – advising on local government legislation, statutory powers and decision-making, council policies and processes, committee and public meeting matters, and interactions with constituents and other stakeholders.
• Official Information (OIA and LGOIMA) – advising on the application of the OIA and LGOIMA, including complex and sensitive requests, public meetings and local government processes, Ombudsmen Act complaints, policy development, and embedding practical OIA and LGOIMA processes.
• Privacy and data protection law – extensive privacy law experience, including Privacy Officer responsibilities, Privacy Act compliance, privacy complaints and investigations, development of breach response and notification frameworks, information sharing arrangements, privacy impact assessments, and training.
• Governance and board advisory – advising Boards and executive teams on governance and legal risk, strategy, director duties, conflicts of interest, Companies Act obligations, and governance level decision-making.
• Commercial contracting – end-to-end management of complex, high-value contracts including service delivery arrangements, funding agreements, and technology and IT contracts.
• Enforcement, investigations, and dispute resolution – regulatory investigations, enforcement policy and framework development, complaints management, mediation, dispute resolution, and negotiations
• In-house legal team leadership – establishing and maturing in-house legal teams and operations, developing legal risk management frameworks, legal technology implementation, and management of external counsel.
• Organisational transition and change projects – providing legal support for complex organisational change, including cross-agency coordination, implementation of new legislative frameworks, and transition of functions and programmes.
• Financial markets – advising on compliance with the NZX Listing Rules and engagement with listed issuers, NZX, and NZ RegCo.
